Point of Sale Systems & You: BioTrack, Dutchie, Cova, & Blaze
Not all point-of-sale systems are created equal. Some are warhorses built for battle, others are sleek showroom pieces with no muscle under the hood. And then there are the ones held together by outdated code and blind optimism. If you're operating in New Mexico—or anywhere else where compliance isn’t optional—this breakdown is for you.
Let’s talk about the real-deal user experience behind the industry’s biggest POS platforms: BioTrack, METRC, Dutchie, Cova, and Blaze.
1. BioTrack (Commercial/Core)
Price: $600–$1,500/month
The granddaddy of compliance tools. BioTrack isn't sexy, but it’s got everything under one roof: POS, inventory, and compliance reporting all in one janky but powerful system.
Pros:
• One system, full visibility
• Deep backend data access
• Integrates well with DIY tools like Google Sheets if you’re cleverCons:
• User interface is ancient and unforgiving
• Steep learning curve
• Large-scale tickets = email hell
New Mexico Reality: You have to use it. There’s no workaround. Clean data in BioTrack means a clean conscience when the state comes knocking.
2. METRC (Not a POS)
Price: $0.45–$0.65 per tag, plus integration fees
METRC is the cop on the corner, not the register at the counter. You don’t sell through it, but everything you sell better be synced to it—accurately and on time.
Pros:
• State-mandated standard in many markets
• RFID tags + traceability
• Forces accountabilityCons:
• Not intuitive or retail-facing
• Zero forgiveness for sync errors
• Needs a good POS partner to function well
NM Status: Doesn’t apply. New Mexico rolls with BioTrack.
3. Dutchie POS (formerly Greenbits)
Price: $500–$2,000/month
Dutchie is what you get when design meets compliance. It’s fast, clean, and surprisingly powerful—especially for stores juggling ecommerce, in-store menus, and inventory.
Pros:
• Sublots + conversions supported
• Strong reporting tools
• Built-in ecommerce and menu management
• AI customer support helps with basicsCons:
• Escalated support tickets can drag
• Bypasses BioTrack by default—dangerous if not monitored
NM Reality: Arguably the most complete POS in the state if you're meticulous about syncing to BioTrack.
4. Cova
Price: $500–$1,800/month
Think Apple Store vibes—Cova is designed for a smooth retail experience. It’s fast, staff love it, and it works well across multiple locations.
Pros:
• Very easy for teams to learn
• Responsive customer support
• Simple feature request processCons:
• Doesn’t yet support sublots or conversions in NM
• Reports are limited without exports
• Can override BioTrack—track your data carefully
NM Reality: Clean and efficient, but still missing key compliance tools for trace-heavy workflows.
5. Blaze
Price: $500–$1,500/month
Blaze wants to be the all-in-one system for verticals—POS, delivery, cultivation, and distro. But in NM? It’s a square peg in a round hole.
Pros:
• Strong for delivery logistics
• Good METRC integration (in other states)Cons:
• Weak support and poor integration in New Mexico
• No sublot/conversion support
• POS interface feels disjointed
• Custom reports are hard to get
NM Reality: You’ll be doing your own audits. Regularly. Blaze isn’t built for New Mexico's BioTrack-driven rules.
Error 404
In New Mexico, BioTrack is the law. The rest are just layers on top. And while Dutchie currently offers the most complete solution for operators juggling compliance, customer service, and ecommerce, the truth is: none of these systems are plug-and-play. They all require discipline, double checks, and a healthy respect for the state’s digital paper trail.
Use the tools. Don’t let the tools use you.
