Worlds Collide: BioTrack and Metrc Merge

In a move that reshapes the backbone of compliance in legal flower, Metrc and BioTrack, the two biggest names in seed-to-sale tracking, have quietly joined forces. On August 5, 2025, they announced a strategic merger that created a new entity: BT Government, Inc. This new company now manages BioTrack’s government contracts, while BioTrack itself shifts focus to commercial tools like POS and ERP.

Metrc—the heavyweight already contracted in 29 states—continues to control the rails of compliance, while BT Government now holds BioTrack’s state deals in New Mexico, New York, Hawaii, Florida, and more.

Operators and regulators weren’t given a heads-up. New York’s Office of Cannabis Management found out the same day the system was set to launch—and immediately hit pause. The reason? Lack of clarity, rising compliance costs, and concerns that choice has been erased from the equation.

This isn’t innovation. It’s consolidation. The two companies that once competed for your state’s compliance dollars now share board seats. And for thousands of licensed operators trying to follow the rules, that smells a lot more like a monopoly than a partnership.
